When I was about the age of 10 my dad and I where in the car and we were having a conversation about my future. At that time, I didn’t really thought about my future goals. At that age I wasn’t the most excellent student in the class, I was just a average student. My grades were mostly B’s and C’s, which my parents weren’t that happy about. In that conversation my dad said something and since that day has been influencing my choices and points of view of my education and future goals. What my dad said is that “if you were born poor it’s not your fault, but if you die poor it’s your fault.” The message that I receive from this saying is that life has many opportunities for you no matter your status but it’s your decision whether to benefit from those opportunities. After that conversation that I had with my dad it made me think how I can use this quote and apply it to my daily life. So, I decided to be more attentive in class and I started to experience the change which wasn’t a easy process for me because getting good grades was a big commitment for me. The hardest thing for me when wanting to get good grades was trying your best at it and not getting the results you expected to get. Every time I failed to achieve my goal I wanted to give up because I thought I wasn’t going achieve my goal anytime soon. At that time I wasn’t very patient because I wanted the process to be quick, but I realize achieving your goal takes commitment and patience in order to fully achieve your goal. After being very committed to this change in my life I started to see results in my grades which were A’s and B’s in my report cards, which made me feel very proud of my commitment. I have been really passionate about my education because even if I was born between a low and middle class financial family and from immigrant parents who didn’t have the opportunity to have a valid education, I want to prove that I have the skills and potential to succeed in life like any other student who was born into a more stable family. Last year, I got the opportunity and got accepted into a program called Northwestern academy for CPS which will prepare me for college and help me get accepted into a high selective college/university. This opportunity that was given to me made me more motivated and gave me more hope that I have the potential to achieve my future goals in life. This new chapter of my life can bring more opportunities for me and my family. Something that I want to do for my parents is to repay them for all their sacrifices that they took, so that I won’t have to worry about money or other issues that they might of struggle with. Since that day when my dad told me about that saying, I have also been interested in finding where I can continue to show my potential which has been one of my biggest dreams for the future of my education, which is to study abroad and hopefully live in South Korea, Japan, and Singapore, which I hope that I can successfully achieve this goal of mines. I have been learning about these countries because of their beautiful culture and excellent education system. These two main reasons makes me want to explore more things outside of the United States and pursue a career that will lead me to achieve great potential in my life and explore and challenge me to become a better person, so that I could help my parents and help other students who have similar goals that I have in life no matter their backgrounds.
